When winter rolls around, there aren’t many better sights than a fresh layer of snow in the morning. However, despite how much we love looking at a winter wonderland, excess snow can cause havoc on your roof.

Accumulation of snow on a roof can lead to water ponding, disfiguration of the roof membranes and more serious issues that could result in total collapse of the roof. When left unmoved, snow will melt and can seep into the crevices of the roof. When it refreezes, the water expands and can cause damage to the structure of the roof.

Our Safe, 5-Step Snow Removal Process

Clear the Space Around Your Property
Before you remove any snow, you need to make sure there are no objects or people around the perimeter of the roof that heavy snow could fall on.

Remove the Excess
Remove as much of the snow yourself as possible. Do not use a metal snow shovel, as it can damage the roof membranes. Make sure you are well-balanced on the roof prior to shoveling.

Clear the Roof
Once the excess snow is removed, use a stiff broom or rake to clear the roof’s surface. Make sure to do this gently, as these tools can damage the roof. It’s also important to sweep the roof evenly, so there are no sections bearing extra weight.

Use Melting Spray
During winter, it can snow at any point. Applying a de-icing or melting spray to the roof once all the snow is removed is a good idea in the name of prevention.

Clear Gutters and Drains
Keep in mind that your gutters and drains will also need to be cleared of snow. Snow can build up in both, which can cause water pooling on the roof since it has nowhere to go. This can, in turn, cause leaks and a range of other problems.

If you see that your flat roof is buckling, leaking, or cracking, or if you notice that water is pooling, be sure to contact Full Coverage Contracting’s team of experts. We’d be happy to offer advice, as well as give you a quote on the needed work.
